Triple Safety Net

The above graphic introduces a “Triple Safety Net” designed to reduce the number of wrong-way driving incidents by combining three different wrong-way driving countermeasures. First, roadside infrastructure, such as thermal cameras and flashing LED “Wrong Way” signs, identifies vehicles entering exit ramps in the wrong direction and then immediately activates visual warnings and alerts local authorities. Second, if a driver continues travelling in the wrong direction, an in-vehicle alert system using a Raspberry Pi and a dashcam detects the backs of road signs and delivers continuous audio warnings, urging the driver to pull over safely. Finally, once a wrong-way driver is found, a network-based mass alert system sends geo-targeted warnings to nearby drivers’ cell phones, warning them of the nearby danger.
