An integration of three different countermeasures designed to enhance protection of modern transit through proactive, multi-layered defense to reduce wrong-way driving (WWD) fatalities.
First: Roadside infrastructure, such as thermal cameras and flashing LED “Wrong Way” signs, identifies vehicles entering exit ramps in the wrong direction and immediately activates visual warnings and alerts local authorities.
Second: If a driver continues travelling in the wrong direction, an in-vehicle alert system using a Raspberry Pi and a dashcam detects road signs and delivers continuous audio warnings, urging the driver to pull over safely.
Finally: Once a wrong-way driver is found, a network-based mass alert system sends geo-targeted warnings to nearby drivers’ cell phones, warning them of the danger.
